Tehachapi, CA, United States (AHN) – A small plane crashed in California on Sunday, killing one person and starting a wild fire that caused residents of at least 100 homes to flee the blaze.
One house after the Cessna 210 single-engine plane went down near Tehachapi. The Kern Fire Department said the blaze in Blackburn Canyon was growing by the minute and had shifted directions three times.
The fire has razed 3,500 acres despite 11 air tankers deployed to assist the more than 500 firefighters working to douse the blaze.
The rapid spread of the fire prompted local officials to issue a mandatory evacuation order for 100 homes in Blackburn Canyon and Mountain Meadows. The evacuees are temporarily housed at Jacobsen Junior High School.
